Understand it
The OWASP Top 10 is an awareness document about major web application security risk categories. It is not a list of ten payloads or a promise that fixing ten issues makes an application secure. The 2025 edition is the version used in this collection.
Start with the system behavior you want to protect: access to records, trusted updates, safe handling of inputs or useful security evidence. The categories help organize these concerns and point toward deeper work.
Under the hood
A category can include many weakness types and implementation patterns. SQL injection and XSS, for example, belong to a broader injection concern but need different controls at different interpreter boundaries. An application can fail in several categories at once.
Use the dedicated pages below to compare a failure with an improved design. The API Security Top 10 is a separate 2023 list with its own focus; do not substitute its numbering for the web Top 10.
Practitioner perspective
Use the list as a starting point for a security program, not as a complete verification standard. Define scope and assurance requirements for the actual application, then use appropriate testing and verification resources to obtain evidence.
Keep framework versions explicit in reports and training. Category names and numbers can change between editions. A historical finding should retain its original mapping while a new review can add a current interpretation.

From risk to evidence
- Understand the system. Identify assets, users and trust boundaries.
- Identify a failure. Describe what can go wrong in concrete terms.
- Choose controls. Select controls that address the actual cause.
- Verify behavior. Collect evidence from allowed and denied scenarios.
A framework organizes the work; evidence supports the conclusion.
Attack view
A fictional application accepts an authenticated request, processes untrusted input and records an outcome. Each boundary can fail differently; a single category label does not explain the whole incident.
Defender view
- Map concrete behavior to a category and preserve the version.
- Use deeper requirements and authorized testing to verify controls.
- Review business logic and operational failure paths as well as common coding defects.
Common mistakes
- The Top 10 is not a complete penetration-testing checklist.
- Category numbers are not stable identifiers across all editions.
