Simple explanation

Understand it

Before posting, check the audience and what appears in the picture. Tickets, ID cards, school details, home addresses or live location can reveal more than the moment you meant to share.

A private account limits the intended audience but cannot stop a recipient taking a screenshot. Review followers, tags and old public posts. Ask permission before sharing someone else’s personal information, especially a child’s.

Technical explanation

Under the hood

Audience controls apply to platform access, not every downstream copy. Metadata, visible backgrounds and linked accounts can reveal additional context. Removing a post does not ensure caches, screenshots or recipients’ copies disappear.

Practitioner explanation

Practitioner perspective

Use data minimization in awareness programs and avoid promising anonymity from a single setting. Separate account compromise response from privacy preference changes. Evaluate default audiences, discoverability and retention when designing social features.

  • Check audience and crop or cover private details before sharing.
  • Review location sharing, followers and account recovery settings.

Common mistakes

  • Deleting a post may not remove copies someone already saved.
