  • You

The person making the decision in this fictional example.

Example: You decide whether to share information, approve a request or check it first.

  • Check or transform

The encryption or decryption operation that changes data between readable form and ciphertext using a key.

Example: Encrypt a private note before storage; the appropriate key is needed to decrypt it.

  • Result

The outcome produced by the operation in this example.

Example: Read the current state and the step explanation to see what succeeded or failed.

With the right key

Encryption protects the content; someone with the required decryption key can recover it.

  1. You Check or transform: Protect the note. The encryption operation uses a key to turn the readable note into ciphertext.
  2. Check or transform Result: Decrypt with key. The authorized recipient uses the appropriate key to recover the original note.

Without the key

Seeing ciphertext alone should not reveal the message when sound encryption is correctly used.

  1. You Check or transform: Protect the note. The note is encrypted before it is stored in this simplified example.
  2. Check or transform Result: Key unavailable. The observer has ciphertext but lacks the key needed to decrypt it. Real security also depends on the algorithm and key handling.

Fictional teaching trace. One moving dot represents an exchange, not a measured network capture.
