Simple explanation

Understand it

A threat is something that could cause harm. A vulnerability is a weakness that could be used. Risk considers the chance and consequences of harm in a particular situation. The same weakness can matter differently to two organizations.

For a fictional clinic, an unavailable booking system can delay care. Discuss the affected service, how an incident could happen and what recovery would require. A severe technical score does not describe all business consequences.

Technical explanation

Under the hood

Assessment depends on exposure, threat capability, existing controls and impact. Numerical scores can support prioritization but contain assumptions. Risk statements should name an asset, scenario and consequence so treatment decisions are traceable.

Practitioner explanation

Practitioner perspective

Assign an accountable risk owner, document assumptions and compare treatment options with measurable outcomes. Separate inherent and residual risk estimates. Review changes in exposure and dependencies; acceptance is a business decision with boundaries, not evidence that a weakness disappeared.

Score only

  1. Finding. A scanner reports severity.
  2. No context. Service importance is unknown.
  3. Poor priority. Effort may miss the largest consequence.

Add exposure and business impact.

Scenario assessed

  1. Service. Identify what the organization needs.
  2. Failure path. Assess the threat, weakness and controls.
  3. Decision. Choose treatment and an owner.

Context makes the decision explainable.

Attack view

A critical service depends on an unsupported exposed system with no tested recovery, increasing the consequence of a failure.

Defender view

  • Prioritize scenarios using service impact and exposure, not technical severity alone.
  • Record owners, treatment decisions and review dates.

Common mistakes

  • A vulnerability score is not the whole business risk.
  • Risk cannot be reduced to zero by buying a product.
